Little Orphan Andy came into our lives right before Christmas 2022. He wandered up and would not leave. We weren’t planning on this kind of Christmas surprise! We wanted to find Little Orphan Andy’s people, and send him home. We weren’t in the market for a cat. They are part of our past. We’ve had many. The vet as well as the chip company was tasked with trying to contact the parent of record. Kathy managed to wheedle the name and phone number of the former owner too. This was after both the vet and the placement company told her they could not release that type of confidential information. They don’t know Kathy! They did…
Everybody Called Them, But . . .
Everybody called and called to no avail. The Boss researched the owner on the web, called alternate phone numbers, left detailed messages more than once, crickets. . . Kathy then called the humane society to find out how we could adopt Andy and have the owner of record changed with the chip directory. That required another even longer trip to the humane society facility in Brandon. Andy got back in the box and off we went.
More Rigmarole
We went through the same rigmarole there. The bottom line is, they are more official and can give some closure. They also gave him a free rabies booster and flea treatment. If they are unable to contact the owner in a week, we are them. New cat owners that is, even though they refer to it as adoption. The week came and went. They did no better than the other folks, the cat now officially owns us.
Today, Andy has ensconced himself into our household. He has good manners and a charming personality. He feels his purpose in life is to patrol our yard and keep any undesirables out. That includes the feral cats. He spends the night inside and patrols the perimeter during the daytime. We decided to keep him inside at night because of the neighborhood coyotes. He and Toby are working it out. They have started sitting next to each other on occasion. He does not destroy stuff nor knock things off tables. Andy is unbelievably well mannered, especially for such a young cat. Watch Andy And Toby at supper time!
